5,000 megawatts of RISC-V processor power...
While browsing the news on my phone, I found out that Micro Magic has created a RISC-V 64-bit chip with a clock speed of 5GHz, as reported here: https://www.eenewseurope.com/news/worlds...5ghz-speed. It runs at 1.1v and works without liquid cooling.
I was curious about the real performance. Still, having clocks that high at just 1.1 volts isn’t something to mock. But the article doesn’t mention the number of cores or whether it uses SMT.
The evaluation suggests it's likely a single or dual-core processor.
Designers across most organizations have quickly realized their mistakes following Intel and Netburst's setbacks (Intel aimed for 5GHz). Note: Intel targeted 5GHz performance with less than 1V by 2005: https://www.anandtech.com/show/680/6
Netburst together with IA-64 proved to be total failures. The Pentium4 ran slower and generated more heat than its predecessor, the Pentium III. AMD Athlon chips were also problematic. Essentially, everything aimed only to push 64-bit RISC processors into server and workstation spaces.
remarkable though I didn't enjoy pushing CPUs above 4.3ghz, yet for RISC there could be improved reliability
