The 8700k launched well, but after two days it cooled down nicely. Temperatures stayed high with the H110 65C max at 5GHz and 1.31V after four years. I changed the case for better airflow and used a cooler with the H100i Platinum. It held around 72°C, which was close to its limit but still manageable. After some stress tests in Aida64, it reached 70°C, then dropped to 4.7GHz and 1.18V before crashing again. Now it’s hitting 86°C and crashes at 86°C, reaching 70°C max. I’m not sure why it keeps getting hotter despite the changes. I replace thermal paste yearly and used IHS with MX5 Can. Could a delid fail after five years? Should I re-delid it? Also, since my room stays around 22°C, I’m thinking about upgrading to something like 12600k or 13600k at launch. Maybe it’s time to consider giving it up now.

It’s possible to adjust the settings again and improve performance. I’ve seen my 8700k run at 5GHz too, and after using LM for a while, it tends to get warmer. I’m not sure if the hardware or the software is more challenging now.

I initially considered this idea, but realized it might be too tough. Since I haven’t updated it, I think the H100i could manage a 5GHz better. It’s only drawing 150W.

You could try the delid again... or the alternative option. I know my 12400F really beats the 8700K in every way. It’d be a great upgrade for you. But perhaps hold off until the 13th generation comes out.

I’m concerned about rewiring again since I secured the IHS once more, and if the material is tougher than the ones before, it might cause the chip to fail.

It should work fine. Prices under 100c mean no throttling. I shouldn't have too many concerns about it.

I’m fine at 85°C during the stress test, though the chip shows instability at that temperature because of power leakage—70°C performed well at 5GHz 1.31.

I understand your point. Perhaps 4.8ghz with a bit more voltage would work better than 5ghz and 1.35v. Likely a slight performance loss for improved heat handling.

Yeah I mean I did. 4.7 at 1.18v and cache at 4.5 which is fine for now 70c max In aida 64
