4790k power throttling
4790k power throttling
I have a 4790k @4.7ghz 1.351v with throttling when it hits 150w, sometimes dropping to 4.0 or even 800Mhz. Temperatures are normal, peaking at 71°C during regular use. Throttle stop doesn’t help—it just turns off OC and forces 4.2ghz. In the BIOS, the power limit is set at max (around 4092), but it doesn’t change anything. My motherboard is an H81M-C/BR. Any suggestions?
H81 mobo? This one isn't meant for overclocking, let alone 4790k. If you've installed a BIOS that allows overclocking, you're not helping yourself or your board, as it has weak VRMs and won't last much with this kind of use.
In this scenario, I think the real issue is the motherboard itself—specifically the VRM overheating. You'll need a Z97 model with solid OC support and proper hardware, including good VRMs that also require sufficient cooling.
Are you using the most recent BIOS update for your motherboard? What type of cooler are you employing to manage the processor? Those voltages are quite high; ideally, you should be within the 1.25v range during such an overclock, or at least below 1.3v. I believe you might be confusing CPU temperatures with those from your VRM. The board doesn’t have any VRM heatsinks, which is a worry regarding how long you’ve been running that overclock on this setup...?

I know its not meant to overclocking, but its able to. The VRMs arent that hot,HWmonitor show constant 85c, but touching them feels like room temperature (both the capacitors and the mosfet). The h60 is doing a pretty good job on cooling, but monitoring the power draw, the 150w mark and the throttle are synced every time, which makes me believe that thats whats holding me back. Unless Realtemp shows the VRM voltage, wich makes no goddam sense, im not misinterpretting data. This is a Hasswell chip, not skylake or coffeelake, so 1.350 is what you would expect. Even jayz2cents made a video if i remember correctly, where he reached 4.6 at 1.3 i think. Im not upgrading to a z-chipset until i have enough money for a 8gen or 9gen cpu. Im just trying to figure out if im missing something thats holding this chip. Btw, i started overclocking 6~7 years ago, never had this problem.
