4790k plus 1080sli WC with OC'd power supply?
Hello fellow builders,
I’m working on a 4790k and intend to overclock it using a Custom 2x360 rad loop (building on an EK 360L kit with a ddc pump). I’m also thinking about upgrading my GPU to a 1080 Air Cooled model (evga, probably). Eventually, in a year, I plan to switch to SLI and water cooling for the GPUs, which would allow pushing their OC.
From what I’ve learned, a power supply above 80+G watts should handle the 4790k plus two 1080s at factory speeds or with only mild overclocking. But if I want to maximize all three cards’ performance, should I choose a 850-watt unit now to avoid running out of power?
The power supplies I’m considering are EVGA G2 750/850 ($89/$109).
These three parts (CPU plus two GPUs) can handle around 500W when running at normal speeds. Including the motherboard and accessories or cooling systems, the theoretical maximum should be close to 550-600W before considering overclocking. The 550-600W figure is the upper limit in theory, but real-world usage will likely use less power.
Since you're focusing on one GPU first, a 750W setup would suffice. However, if you plan to push overclocking across all three components later, an 850W system would be more strategic from the start. A good 850W model doesn’t need to be expensive.
The FSP Hydro G850W (Gold rated, fully modular) is available for around $100 after a rebate and offers excellent build quality.

Thanks for focusing on just one GPU at first; a 750W setup would suffice. However, if you want to push performance further, targeting an 850W or more from all three components makes sense early on. A solid 850W option doesn’t need to be expensive.
