4770K suffered a crash, either with or without OC.
Hi everyone, my PC has been with me for years. About a month ago I made some changes to keep it up-to-date and ready for gaming. My original setup was: an Asus H97 Plus with an Intel Core i3 4160 at 3.6Ghz, a Cooler Master 240 AIO cooler, two 4GB RAM sticks, a HyperX Fury 1600 with Nvidia Gtx960, a Gigabyte Windforce OC ADATA 512GB NVMe SSD, a 500W PSU, Windows 11 Pro 22H2. I upgraded to a 4770K motherboard, added two more 4GB RAM modules bringing the total RAM to 16GB, and installed an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super.
The system now runs at 3.9Ghz with a 1.25Vcore setting. It’s been stable for about a week or so, but I still face some issues. Random crashes with BSODs, especially during critical processes, and freezes that happen unpredictably. Sometimes it freezes while gaming, other times when idle. I ran stress tests without success.
Temperatures stayed around 75°C max CPU and 86°C max GPU, which is a bit high for the cards. I tried different PSUs and even a 600W one, but nothing changed much. After an hour of watching YouTube, it crashed again. I checked BIOS settings, but the problem persisted.
After a while, I was stuck trying fixes: disabling Intel Smart Step, locking CPU clocks at 3.3V with 1.25Vcore. It helped a bit for a few days, but 3.3V isn’t ideal. I’m considering upgrading to a 4th generation CPU and thought about replacing the GPU, but it’s still working decently.
My monitor is 1080p and fine. What are your thoughts? Should I stick with this setup or move on to something newer? I’m thinking about buying a 4790K in the next month, but for now I’m stuck. Thanks for any advice!
This idea came from my research; adjusting RAM timings also impacted stability. I wasn’t sure I could verify it using Prime95, but I’m planning to test it tonight. If it works, what alternatives exist besides a hardware upgrade?
I performed large FFT calculations using prime95 for two hours without any issues. The system remained stable, temperatures stayed below 76, and it successfully handled a pass of 512. No unusual behavior observed.
Because the system is unstable, keep pressing the shift key and then click reboot. Enter troubleshoot mode, navigate to advanced settings, launch the command prompt. Execute sfc /scannow, wait until the scan finishes, then restart. Check if the issue persists after the update.
Thank you for your message, I attempted this, but there were no results at all. I value your feedback.
I found something interesting today while setting up Cyberpunk 2077. It installed smoothly without any issues, but I chose to use a third-party updater because official ones aren’t available in my area. This tool handles file installation, unpacking, and re-compressing, which sometimes causes problems. No matter what I tried, the PC would crash. After some attempts, the first update caused a freeze, but the system recovered after a few seconds. The second update worked perfectly without any issues. However, the file integrity check led to a BSOD with a "Kernel data inpage error" message, which also crashed my PC before. It seems these updates might be affecting system stability. I’m looking for ways to connect these events and find a solution. Thanks!
And remember, whenever the BSOD occurs, it doesn’t restart by itself. The BSOD display isn’t fully transparent—around 50% opacity—and you can still see what’s behind it, but nothing functions except the BSOD itself. Occasionally it crashes and restarts on its own.
