So a few weeks back I purchased a new motherboard with the goal of overclocking my 4690k. Everything appeared normal until one day my PC began lagging without any obvious cause. (regardless of what I was doing).
I opened up BIOS (Z97 Gaming 3) and noticed the CPU temperatures were at 90°C inside the BIOS!
After removing the pump from the CPU and applying new thermal paste, things improved.
But a few days later the same issue returned, and I’m still puzzled about what’s causing it. It seems unlikely the pump was the problem since the issue disappeared and then reappeared. (Even if it was, 90°C in BIOS? That doesn’t add up...)
When I realized the problem came back, I reset everything in BIOS, rebooted, and still faced these extreme temperatures (using RealTemp).
Now I’m hesitant to even try booting it again without knowing the root cause.
🙁
If anyone has any suggestions or insights, please feel free to reply.

Confirm if the pump is properly secured against the CPU. Without sufficient pressure, the connection between the CPU heat spreader and the waterblock on the pump may not function effectively.

It turns out the pump wasn't connected to the right port on the motherboard. It's unclear how it lasted through my gaming sessions last week, but I'm relieved it's fixed.

Checking the previous connection and current setup to ensure accuracy.

I need to know what it was connected to before and what it is currently connected to.

Everything is working properly now.
Certain motherboards require the devices connected to CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT to match... This might have been the issue.
