I can't comment on the 3rd generation Ryzen, but my 2700x with PBO would increase to 1.5v at 75c under full custom loop, reaching single core speeds of 4.5Ghz and all cores at 4Ghz. By setting an offset core voltage to -0.093V, I lowered temperatures to a maximum of 65c and maintained 4.2Ghz all-core boost with PBO while keeping single core speeds at 4.5Ghz. This is what you're seeing—similar to how I handle Nvidia GPUs, higher clock speeds with cooler chips.
It performed impressively at 3800x, but the 3900x requires around 1.38v at 4.3GHz. It's running well, but achieving stable 4.5GHz overclock seems challenging.
I've adjusted the settings to 4.475Ghz with 1.3625v, running at around 38°C. Initially, it worked well at 4.475Ghz and 1.35v for some games, but Gears 5 caused issues. I increased the voltage back to 1.3625v and it now runs smoothly. The improvement likely comes from the chip being in a 3700X binned range, giving more room for overclocking.
I've repeatedly tried 4.5 GHz but it hasn't been stable yet. I haven't used the new cooler yet. I plan to give it another shot tomorrow evening after work. With the lower temperatures I'm experiencing, I'm hopeful it might work. I'm curious though—will my current top core speed of 4.475 GHz limit my performance?
