I own a G.Skill DDR5 Trident Z Neo with two 16GB sticks. I’m looking for more RAM, knowing DDR5 can present some challenges. Some users have managed to get four sticks working, and there’s been progress over time. Recently, it seems easier to add more, especially by enabling EXPO in the BIOS. However, I’m unsure about handling memory configurations myself—my confidence is low, and I don’t want to risk damaging anything. What are my chances of getting four more sticks to work? Should I upgrade to a larger package instead, or is it better to replace this unit and keep the rest? The cost difference would be significant, so I’d prefer to avoid extra expense.

It would be quite a challenge, requiring several steps and efforts. The chances of success are low, so it might not work at all.

I'm running Expo with a 6000 skill and 36GB RAM. Two 2x16GB kits were provided. No setup needed—second kit worked perfectly and Expo launched smoothly. That's unusual compared to others.

It seems like you're wondering if the issue might be related to the motherboard or just the CPU. Keep an eye on any patterns in the problems you're experiencing.

The memory controller is indeed on the CPU, yet solid VRM on the motherboard makes a difference. Both the 7700X and 7800X3D on the B650 Aorus Pro Ax board handle the four sticks, likely using the identical controller.

With a 7600X, it's unclear if the controllers match. I'm not sure how to tell. 😅

I've seen any motherboard work for it, and I've seen any CPU work with it. It's more of a BIOS problem than anything else. There is a cycle of it working no problem to it not even booting and back again. While it can work, you would likely want to try a few BIOS revisions to find one that does work. The other issue is that the kit you have isn't guaranteed to be one memory chip or another. The second biggest factor besides the BIOS for whether 4 sticks will work or not is if the memory chips are the same, so because that kit can contain two different memory dies, there's a 50/50 chance that even with a good BIOS you'll struggle to get it to work (manual tuning can sometimes help, but I've seen it where they won't even boot in the same system). Just because there's more stories of it working though doesn't mean that they're common, they're just getting less rare. *good memory topology. The VRM is something completely different.

I aim to use only two drives, which now offer up to 96GB with this setup.
