The Intel Core i3 8100 features four cores and four threads, making it a quad-core processor. It’s suitable for light gaming and everyday tasks, but not ideal for high-performance or graphically intensive games. With a dedicated GPU, you can run more demanding titles smoothly, though the CPU alone won’t handle heavy workloads.

The GPU you're referring to has four cores, which is considered below average these days.

I understand you're referring to a CPU model. You mentioned a GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRAM, which is a common configuration.

I also watched that video, just curious about the i3 8100. Games usually include titles like Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, Valorant, and Roblox.

The i3 8100 functions similarly to an i5 7500, which was a sensible match with the 1060 6GB at launch, so it makes sense. If those titles are among your plans, the i3 8100 should manage them well. A solid choice if you secured a great deal on both the CPU and motherboard. I’m curious about the current pricing since newer i3 chips often include HyperThreading and higher speeds without a big price increase.

For these titles, I expect you should manage fine, though your setup likely hits the CPU limits right out of the box. Where are you standing? Retro systems usually come with a higher price tag, which makes sense. A search in the U.S. market reveals chips around $200, while components like the 10105F are available for about $110 and offer better performance. Unless local pricing varies significantly, you might find more affordable options.

I understand, you already have the board and CPU ready; all I need is to assemble them.

I just want to enjoy those games without high graphics settings. I'm in Africa, and the CPU costs are really high here. This setup is meant for a friend who has an old i5 750 or 760 from the first generation—it's a modest upgrade for him. Thanks for your help!

CPU performance in these games has noticeably improved, especially for CPU-bound titles. Coffee Lake offers roughly half the IPC compared to Lynnfield, which can boost frame rates from 40 to 60 frames per second if the processor was previously the bottleneck. While the numbers on paper match, significant upgrades have been made to the cores over the last ten years.

It's a noticeable leap, clearly demonstrating the progress of CPU technology over time.
