Hello! You're planning to assemble a new system and are focusing on the Ryzen 3950X with 32GB RAM while keeping your existing 970 Strix OC. Since you're not aiming for gaming performance but rather a workstation for 3D modeling, texturing, and rendering, I’ll need to clarify how these components will interact. The older GPU should still function well for your intended tasks, though the newer CPU might offer better efficiency. Let me know if you'd like more details!

Your processing load comes from the CPU, so it's okay. The GPU isn't needed unless your task is GPU-dependent; in that case, it can handle it, though performance will still be limited to its capabilities.

From the gaming angle, a weak GPU can slow down the CPU even though it’s seen as perfect in games. In 3D modeling or animation, both CPU and GPU play roles, so they must work together to maximize performance, depending on the task and any physics involved—modeling is mostly single-threaded.

I mostly handle modeling, texturing, and rendering. Physics isn’t just on the GPU—CPU plays a role too. Not entirely clear about GPU usage in 3DSmax, though. Let me know if you’re familiar with it. Thanks!

All necessary parts for running and calculating code are already saved in VRAM, just like the data sent to the CPU so it can work on it. For processing to happen, they both need to combine what they’ve handled, even though they don’t rely heavily on each other constantly. If one struggles or there’s limited room for improvement, it becomes a bottleneck.

The setup runs smoothly without noticeable lag on GPU-only apps.

Modeling works in one direction at a time, so the 3950X won't offer much assistance there. Rendering can be handled by either the CPU or GPU (or both), based on which runs faster for you. The GTX 970 becomes a bottleneck only when you need live physics simulations with textures and the GPU struggles to display them. Yes, physics calculations are handled on the CPU.

The CPU doesn't influence GPU-only programs, like rendering tasks that run entirely on the GPU. You didn't mention CPU-only scenarios, and I wasn't trying to address that part. My response applies only when both parts need to work together.

You might prefer a more affordable option like the RX5700 or the 2060Super, which saves you money while still offering good performance.

You won't need to stress about needing a 970 anymore. You'll move to AM4, which I think is what you're planning to upgrade to as well. Your future path toward the 3950X and Ryzen 4000 will remain available instead of settling for the current top consumer CPU paired with an outdated 970.
