3900x or 9900k
3900x or 9900k
Hello, in my country the 3900x setup with a more expensive motherboard is around 90 euros higher than the 9900k paired with an RTX 2080 SUPER 1440p monitor. I’m mainly using it for gaming and Autodesk Maya, so I’m torn about whether the extra 90 euros is worth it—especially if I don’t upgrade my RAM to 3600. I’ve noticed big differences in gaming performance, and I’m curious about how the 9900k will handle my renders since it’s still an HT 8 core. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.
The debate between Intel and AMD centers on platform compatibility and future upgrades. The AM4 setup seems more versatile compared to the Z390, while AMD has confirmed support until 2020. With Zen 7NM expected mainly as an update, the AM4 lineup should likely receive a new generation chip. I believe it’s increasingly clear that Intel’s 10NM will need updated motherboards. As someone who used the 3900X, it’s a significant upgrade—multi-core performance rivals the Threadripper 2950X and matches the gaming capabilities of the 9900K. At around $500, it makes sense unless you’re only playing at 1080p with a high-refresh monitor and limited to eight cores. Still, many conditions apply for the i9 9900K or K models.
TL;DR the Ryzen motherboards still have options for the Ryzen 4000 and Z390 (9900k boards) are outdated, most are expensive. Unless you're using a weaker processor that fits the 9900k, it doesn't make much sense. Get a mid-range B450/x470 or a budget X570—avoid cheap MSI models. These boards are worth upgrading in about five years at most, assuming you need it. The 3900X is already powerful.
