Amazon Aus lists both the 3700x and 3900x at their lowest recorded price for this component. You're weighing the 3700x against the 3900x, considering whether the 1X processors might be worth it now or if the extra cost of the 3900x would be justified by future gaming needs. You mentioned you're focused on gaming and expect more multicore usage soon. The note indicates the 3900x is priced $170 AUD higher than the 3700x, which is about $115 USD.

Never run at maximum speed with a 3900x just for gaming. If you're only playing, save some cash and choose a 3700x instead, using the extra funds elsewhere.

2080 super, x570 or b550 — mainly for gaming. I thought the additional cores might extend my gaming time by a few years. What do you think?

Highly improbable. The 3900x is mainly suited for workstation tasks. Even then, a 3700x offers better productivity. Using a 3900x won’t let you reach its full capability. Your results will match those of a 3700x, and you’ll be wasting money.

The 3900x isn't suited for the purpose you have in mind. Running games won't utilize enough cores, so you won't notice any performance gains for likely more than five years. It can't be returned once installed.

Thanks all for the support! I'll use 3700x and allocate the surplus to the GPU.

For clarity, I own a 3800x+2080 resolution setup, and my machine handles any task you present without difficulty at 3440x1440.

Perfect! Your setup is solid—1080p at 144Hz should give you smooth performance. Just keep in mind that 2080p might be extra if you're aiming for higher resolution. Enjoy the game!

But a 1440p screen... You can use a 3600 + 5700XT setup without issues. 3700x + 2080S works well for 1080p gaming, even if it feels a bit extreme.
