The optimal setup depends on your needs, but 16x2 offers better bandwidth and performance compared to 8x4. You won’t get quad channel support with either, so the choice hinges on speed requirements rather than configuration limitations.
Running 4x kits at high speed often gives inconsistent results with the Ryzen 3000. I ended up purchasing a 2x16 kit because my board refused to support 4x regardless of adjustments I made, even though it had previously performed well.
Four sticks increase the load on the IMC, which may limit the achievable frequency compared to using two sticks together. However, if the four-stick setup matches the dual stick in performance, the results will be similar.
