For RAM under 4GB, a 32-bit configuration offers the optimal choice. Choose the one that provides the best value at the time of buying.

The difference in performance between 32 and 64-bit W7 processors on limited RAM isn't significant enough to make a major impact. Upgrading RAM might not be necessary unless you're experiencing noticeable slowdowns.

32 bit works because it uses less RAM compared to 32-bit applications. Running on 2GB is generally suitable for Windows XP, though 64-bit isn't ideal. It also doesn't provide enough memory to handle the operating system and other tasks smoothly.

Even with a 64-bit CPU, performance gains might not always be obvious.

64 bit programs take up on average about 30% more RAM, that is quite a bit of RAM when you don't have any to spare. There is a small performance penalty but IMO RAM is a far more pressing concern with such a machine in todays world than the minimal improvement a few extra registers are going to bring. The disadvantage is obviously a lot of software now comes in 64 bit, but this machine is very much at the end of its life anyway.
