The R3 3300x is extremely hard to find, so should you choose a R3 3100 instead, is it worth spending $110–$120? I’m assembling two budget-friendly builds for friends and hoped for the 3300x, but it’s rarely available. I’m not very familiar with buying cheap on the Intel side, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also look at other platforms for PC parts. Check pcpartpicker.com—it works well.

You can access any setup you desire and even request components. If you're in the United States...

Focus on choosing components that match your specific needs rather than relying on compatibility tools. You’re already using the right system, so prioritize performance and reliability over generic suggestions.

I think the 3100 priced between $115 and $120 fits well for a low-budget setup. For Intel, the comparable model is the 10100, though it offers superior gaming performance even when you push the 3100 to higher frequencies (though you can't overclock the 10100). The 3300 would be a better choice at the same cost, but it isn’t available. The 3100 edges slightly in production work like Adobe Premiere Pro, so opt for it if productivity matters. For gaming, go with the 10100. For everyday use, the 3100 is a solid pick, especially since you can upgrade the CPU later on budget boards.

If you're planning to spend $120 on the R3 3300x, it might be better to consider the Ryzen 5 3600x instead. Overall, it doesn't seem like a good value at that price point.

Great plan! You've got a friend interested in gaming and another who's diving into animation and modeling classes next term. Perfect for building both. Thanks for sharing!

The 3600/3600x values exceed $200 currently. This represents a significant impact on many individuals' budgets. If the 3600 remained at $155, I’d agree to proceed, but it’s not.

Certainly worth the higher price if the funds are available; it will make a noticeable impact on rendering quality.

It's pretty accurate that costs have gone up lately. I purchased an R5 3600X for just $160.
