3 i5 processor paired with Windows 11 operating system.
I own a refurbished 12-year-old Dell desktop running a third-gen i5 (around 3450), which has been great for media tasks. I’m considering switching to Windows 11 Enterprise soon. Can you confirm if this setup will still function with regular updates and maintenance? Do any of you have Windows 11 installed on older hardware? Thanks!
This question would be more appropriate in the Windows sub forum, located lower on the main forum page under Operating Systems.
Try this utility! https://github.com/builtbybel/Flyby11 It generates a Win11 installer with customizable settings and predefined bypasses.
It functions currently, but only Microsoft can confirm its future stability. An update might be introduced that disrupts compatibility, either deliberately or accidentally. A simple cause could involve the adoption of AVX 2 at a core level within the operating system, as most supported processors include this feature, while older generations lack it, potentially leading to frequent crashes or boot failures. Whether this occurs remains uncertain. This represents the trade-off you'd accept for using unsupported hardware.
Win11 offers performance benefits and is suitable for media use. Linux provides a lighter footprint and speed, making it ideal for home media setups. Sticking with Win10 ensures stability and avoids the pressure of a deadline.
About gaming, mostly anything running on Steam works on Linux with proton compatibility layer- except games with kernel malware... Hmmm anti cheat system Even Battle.net is usable with Lutris
If protons behave like wine, I need to wonder about the extra effort this layer requires. With my limited computing resources—Gen3 i5, 16GB RAM, GTX 960—I don’t have much power left on that setup. On Windows 10, things work pretty well, honestly...
