Hey there! I'm finding it tough to decide between the 3970X and the 2990WX. The 3970X sounds expensive, but I'm more at ease with the current 2990WX setup. I'm thinking about creating a high-performance workstation that handles gaming, video rendering, 3D animation, gameplay recording, and music playback all at once. While the 3970X offers better upgrade options like more RAM and built-in Ethernet, I'm worried about the high cost. What do you think?

I think the 4th generation Ryzen Threadripper might arrive in the next six months at most, given that the Zen 3 5000 series launches on November 5th. I’d prefer to wait for a price reduction on the 3rd generation Threadripper before upgrading.

Great suggestion, CommanderAlex! Thanks! To be honest, it’s not the most precise way to put it—more about what I aim for. Still, I’m worried about overspending and not valuing the extra 25% boost in single-core performance that the 3970X provides.

With the same GPU, a CPU with four cores performs better than the 2990WX. It makes sense to hold off for the next generation release, but you might want to look at AM4 models like the 5950X (released in November) despite possible supply delays. The TR version is expected next year, though timing is uncertain—my estimate points around March 2021.

Pick 3970X now or wait—skip the 2990WX. It offers much more than just better single-core speed. The way the 2990WX handles memory bandwidth and splits it across nodes is a big deal... Churro has already covered most of this for me.

Single-core speed plays a role in video games since many titles today can run on just one processor. A 25% drop in performance can significantly affect frame rates.

You guys are the best, thank you so much for taking the time to add in all of your inputs. I'm assuming the odd memory access layout also applies to the 2970WX, as it is also a WX chip? There's one on Ebay for a really sick price so I'm seeing if I should make the leap or be patient. Also I checked the benchmark link; G O D, WX gets absolutely demolished in gaming. Of course, not its intended uses, but I'm trying to find a fair balance of sufficient frames for my pay, and crackhead energy multitasking.
