2800 DDR3 stable on Nehalem
This imc is quite limited. I purchased dual-rank CFR sticks for a 1156 combo I plan to sell; it only requires around 2100-2200. I’m hoping to try CFR a bit and reach 3000 quickly—some posts even reached 3100, though not much beyond that. It’s a bit disheartening, and I suspect the issue isn’t about dual-sided design. These seem effective mainly at frequencies above C11 and X58; they don’t go past C11. I’ve spent hours trying to keep 3000 stable, but it never comes. It feels like I should have stopped when voltage exceeded 2.1V, needing around 2.4V for any real stability. That’s a lot of wasted time.
I noticed the board hits its limits at 2.1–2.2V and then crashes on the second channel with inconsistent detection. The 2900 showed promise but didn’t last long. I think the sticks might have worn out since they used to run smoothly at 2.06V during those years. Testing at 2.5V gave me less than stable performance, and I’m not sure how far to push it.
I’m hoping for better sticks and a more capable board—maybe something with triple channel would help. For now, I’ll keep looking for Nehalem options (i7s, Xeons), upgrade my motherboard (the Ex58 U3 is a solid pick), and buy a GSW or WXE model. A 970/980X or a W36xx Xeon would be ideal.
If you’re interested in mods for ASUS R2/R3 boards, it might help eliminate the forced 2:1 uncore clock speed. I’d also like some advice on 2Gb SDRAM ICs that can reach 3000+ with C10/11 and even better 4Gb options.
Nehalem usually runs at 2:1 or 1:1 uncore memclk, but anything between those speeds often causes crashes or slowdowns. I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort unless you’re targeting high-density frequencies.
