Determine the number of ports required for a 25G connection, assess your tolerance for noise levels, and clarify your budget expectations. Edit: Additional questions have been included.

For 8 ports native 25G plus two 100G units this setup fits around $1000 using CRS510-8XS-2XQ-IN. If you require up to 16 25G ports and a few 100G ports, the CRS518-16XS-2XQ-RM or CRS504-4XQ-IN options are available for about $1600, offering four 100G ports that can be expanded to sixteen 25G ports. For higher capacity, consider the CRS520-4XS-16XQ-RM which supports breakout configurations and costs around $2200. If you need advanced inspection tools like Suricata or Zenarmor at these speeds, expect a machine price above $10K. Building your own or using used equipment with Mellanox Connect-X 4 could be a cost-effective path.

You may find it more economical to choose 100gbit since those are widely available. At these rates, consider implementing an L3 switch that supports SONiC. You can run L3 and a basic Linux firewall on it to achieve raw throughput. Otherwise, if you aim to save costs, you might need to assess your specific needs—since connecting directly to your PC could work as a router—and just stay updated on updates.

He needs to upload big files but the current connection is slow, making it annoying. I run my own lab using Proxmox, Truenas, and stuff like MC servers for friends and gaming servers since I’m on a budget.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I’m thinking about setting up a router for that purpose and won’t be using Susicata or Zenarmor. Appreciate your support. Hope you’re enjoying those pillowsides too. Thanks, Marco!

The receiving servers are very unlikely to permit 25 gigabit in, which would likely limit uploads to their maximum capacity.

Upload servers should also be reliable—get lucky if you receive a gigabit connection. Keep this in mind.
