Morning guys,
I'm facing some odd problems while overclocking my new 2500k.
Right now I'm running at a fixed voltage of 1.34v and 4.5ghz for stability.
Previously, I was at 1.3v during Prime Stable with Custom FFTs from 128 to 2048k, but once I started browsing the internet it crashed after closing Prime.
I know the BSOD 124 is usually linked to VCORE issues, though it seems to work fine in Prime95 but not under normal tasks. Also, VCORE tends to drop to 1.296v when loading, so a lack of VCORE shouldn't be the main problem.
My current setup includes:
- LLC on Ultra High
- VRM at 350khz
- Phase Control on Extreme
- Duty Control on Extreme
- C1 Disabled
- C3 & C6 Enabled
- PLL overvoltage enabled
- Turbo disabled (4.5Ghz on all Cores)
- Memory at 1.65v
- PLL Votage at 1.875
- Speedstep Enabled
- EPU Disabled
Any advice would be appreciated?

BSOD Code 0x124 indicates a missing Vcore, and opening IE might require an alternative instruction set compared to what Prime95 employs.

I don't understand why it's not working at 1.34v—I thought Firefox might be handling it differently. I plan to experiment with it tonight, using BLCK and Multiplier adjustments to get IBT Stable. I believe 103.2 is the optimal setting for me, and ASUS Autotune seems to favor that number. I'm also seeking advice on specific motherboard stable configurations (my specs are listed in my profile).

I would leave BLCK at 100 personally because it impacts your HDD and might cause data issues.
Are you using custom water cooling? From your message, it looks like you use 5Ghz @ 1.51V. I noticed similar results before with custom water cooling—no performance drop over five months, but temperatures stayed below 60°C during prime95 tests. It seems 5Ghz is mainly for testing purposes?
Why not push beyond stress tests? If you want to confirm stability, try running IBT, 3DMark11, browsing the web, or watching a movie on your PC.
If everything holds up, you can proceed with whatever you prefer.

BLCK seems to influence HDDs too? I thought it only impacted memory.
😵
Some users boost BLCK for consistent overclocking performance.
I’m using air cooling with a 73°C temperature after 8 hours of Prime, which isn’t too high for an air-cooled setup at 1.51v and 5ghz. I was checking chip stability and heatsink efficiency during those 8 hours, but I won’t run it at those speeds except when my 7970 hits 3Dmark Vantage/11. If I can keep it stable at 1.3v and 4.5Ghz, I’ll be satisfied with a constant overclock for 24/7 use. The extra 500Mhz won’t really help with gaming – Sandy Bridge is much more capable.
I found two BIOS updates that improved stability on the board – Ver 601 and Ver 1101. I plan to try the 1101 tonight to see if it helps.
The key point is, it worked when I was using Firefox and Prime95, but crashing right after closing Prime95.

I'll check if I can locate the article about BLCK overclocking. 73C performs well with air cooling at that voltage—please share your experience with the new BIOS.

Hey there, it would be great to have a discussion about settings for 2500k overclocks. I recall when I was using the Q6600, there were lots of threads about overclocking the 680i chipset, since everyone was facing issues at that time. I’ll make sure to share my results on this thread, though it won’t be until around 8pm GMT.

I believe Kentsfield marked the most significant advancement in CPU technology over the past decade, around 2007 when Quad Cores were still emerging and Dual Cores were only beginning to appear. The result was a Quad Core capable of overclocking to 3.6ghz on air, easily surpassing every benchmark tested. I owned a Q6600 at 3.6Ghz (before degradation), with 2,8800GTs in SLI and 4GB of CL4 DDR2 at 800Mhz. It was an incredibly fast machine...the memory performance...
