2.5 or 10 gig router that doesn't use Wi-Fi
I needed just one device. I considered a 2.5 gig switch, as they’re currently affordable. No Wi-Fi routers are suggested.
Negate 4100, Negate 6100, or DIY 4 port PFSense box found on Amazon or eBay. Be aware, generally a router isn’t great at switching tasks. Switches rely on specialized components that handle low power and memory needs, whereas routers use more complex computer hardware. Consider them like a CPU and a GPU—CPUs can manage graphics but not as efficiently. This is why they’re usually kept apart in business settings. I don’t know of any consumer 2.5 GB routers without WiFi besides the Ubiquiti Dream Machine pro SE, which also includes an 8-port Poe switch but only supports gigabit speeds.
If you don’t need more than gigabit on the WAN side, definitely yes—that would be ideal.
It seems like you're considering a setup with a single device for higher speeds in your area. Would be useful mainly for faster transfers between devices like your NAS and PCs. Think about using an edge router, a switch, and a separate access point. Does that sound reasonable?
