I was considering purchasing the Asrock B650M HDV M.2 with two M.2 slots—one PCIe Gen 5 and another Gen 4. I need to decide whether to install it in the first or second slot. If I place it in the second slot, will it affect performance? I’ve heard that the second slot is linked via the motherboard’s chipset and tends to be slower compared to the first slot, which connects directly to the processor.
Not now but I’ll purchase it later when it’s affordable. The Gen4 price point is what I’d expect. Will my PC detect the change if I transfer the Gen4 drive from the Gen5 slot to the Gen4 slot?
You might only need to adjust the boot sequence in BIOS when rearranging devices. The operating system could encounter problems, but usually it functions normally. The transition from Gen3 to Gen4 shows almost no visible change. Purchasing a Gen5 model seems unnecessary for now, as prices won't drop soon and it isn't essential for everyday use.
i'll purchase the same m.2 but a larger capacity like 2 or 4 tb. the two sates will likely be used for connecting an extra ssd drive. there are several purposes for these cables—primarily linking the motherboard to storage devices. if you're only planning to add ssds, ensure they support the speed you need (some offer up to 500mb/s). beyond movies and photos, they can also serve as a backup drive or for running additional software. always check compatibility with your system before buying.
They're suitable for installing SATA SSDs or HDDs. A 500 MB/s speed is more than sufficient already. For many applications, storage becomes the bottleneck even at this rate. I own two SATA SSDs—one Gen3 NVMe and one Gen4 NVMe. Beyond benchmarks, it's hard to spot any distinction between these devices in everyday use. Very few games showed improvement switching from SATA to NVMe, and even fewer saw gains from moving from Gen3 to Gen4. Unless you frequently move large files or run software that demands high input/output, the difference is negligible.
