2016 MMOs
Do you believe this year will see a powerful new MMO similar to Black Desert or Blade & Soul, or are you more skeptical about their success? I’ve always struggled to grasp why MMOs resonate so well, yet I feel an urge to find one now.
Many top MMO titles have been active for years—uncertain if any fresh releases can match the depth found in games like World of Warcraft. Expansions keep adding content to existing franchises, but unless a completely new genre emerges, it’s hard to see anything truly innovative on the horizon. As someone who enjoys the core loop and possibilities of MMO experiences, it’s disappointing to think the industry isn’t pushing this formula further.
The division and possibly (if released this year) Everquest Next could work well. Another choice might be World of Warcraft, though it's declining as Blizzard shifts toward more social/occasional titles (which aligns with their business strategy). The game is getting less intense compared to Burning Crusade, which is why I stopped playing a year ago. SWTOR offers a good story experience.
Imagine a world where a game with the same mechanics as Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess existed. I’d definitely play it, but pressing buttons for enemies and using number keys feels unexciting. The phrase “Once Inside, Your Friends Won't Be Seeing Much Of You!” reminds me more of a misleading trap rather than a fun experience for young players.
