Do you have anything essential that you can't live without? You might just attempt a wipe and reinstall.

Everything seems fine, I guess I’ll keep focusing on fixing the windows machines. I upgraded to the latest OS X last night, but when I left this morning it was still running... I’m really confused about what’s going on.

I performed an upgrade on a 2010 MacBook Pro yesterday and it became unresponsive midway through. I had to shut it off and then restart the installation process.

I've had to do this at least ten times now. After work, I make a High Sierra USB and install it that way, keeping it offline for safety. I'll update you once it's done. (Unless I get home and the upgrade is already finished)

Once you install the first thing, spotlight indexing kicks in and uses a lot of CPU power. You can stop it from starting, but it’s better to wait about 20 minutes for it to finish. Upgrading during installation takes a long time, so I’d consider a clean install and restore data from backups. I’d go straight to High Sierra or just Sierra. I’ve heard the new Apple partition method isn’t great for older SSDs and HDDs.

It should take around 24 hours or more. I’ll attempt a clean install later today when I’m back and will update you. Please remember the MacBook Pro needs me to press and hold the power button until the light keeps flashing before it boots.

That's a good suggestion. You might want to reset the PRAM and SMC to see if that resolves the startup problem. I'll also check the temperatures using the Mac fan control to rule out overheating as a factor. Where did you obtain the Lion installer?

The assumption comes from the machine's age and typical performance expectations for its type.
