standard consumer CPUs support dual-channel RAM; you can connect four modules but it will still operate in dual-channel mode. A 2x16GB setup versus a 4x8GB setup isn't a major gap, yet the 2x16GB configuration tends to overclock more consistently and effectively than the latter because it places less strain on the memory controller. Both gain from memory interleaving, which enhances data throughput.

The quad channel concept isn't available on consumer motherboards. Which one are you using?

Again, no. Please don't tout quad channel outside of Threadripper or HEDT, as it is NOT supported by most consumer motherboards. Dual channel is. 4 sticks run in dual channel, 2 sets of dual channel if you will. Quad channel is something special, and not just a 4 stick dual channel setup. That said, there is very little difference between 2x and 4x sets now, so I would go with what you prefer. Expandability or aesthetics.

the cpu also plays a role in the limitation, i don’t recall any time with quad channel on consumer devices. you should also consider the topology—daisy chain means stick two, not four. if it’s t-topology, go with four sticks for better performance.

Your comparisons are really impressive, it's hard to believe they're that insightful.

That comes from somewhere you can find. It makes sense because fewer sticks mean less trouble overall.
