Your new laptop comes with dual-channel memory. Switching to 32GB at 3200MHz DDR4 would likely offer a noticeable boost compared to the current setup, though it’s still more costly than the upgrade you’re considering. When evaluating performance, DDR5 generally provides better efficiency and higher speeds than DDR4, especially in modern systems. The key factor is the generation—DDR5 offers superior performance potential, while MHz matters less if the memory type improves overall system responsiveness.
Ensure sufficient RAM; 16GB might fall short in certain situations. DDR5 offers better speed, but it doesn’t always provide a significant boost unless the workload is memory-heavy. Performance gains aren’t straightforward—6000MHz DDR5 isn’t simply twice as fast as 3000MHz DDR4 because of latency and timing differences. In reality, the improvement is only around 20%. If your laptop supports DDR5, you can’t run it on a system that only uses DDR4, as they aren’t compatible physically.
The variation would be significant since DDR4 memory isn't compatible with DDR5 systems
I’ve selected two 32GB DDR5 options at 4800MHz after fewer choices appeared for 5600MHz. One comes from Kingston and the other from Crucial. I’m more comfortable with Kingston since I use their memory in my desktop, but I’ve heard that the Crucial model doesn’t require any BIOS adjustments and works well out of the box. It’s unclear which performs better with Ryzen processors.
The 4800MHZ CL40 is indeed the JEDEC standard, and most DDR5 RAM will operate at that speed by default. Usually, you need to enable XMP/EXPO in the BIOS to reach the advertised rate. The Kingston configuration offers slightly better timing but isn’t exceptional. Running it at the default setting won’t hurt much in terms of performance. I came across a model that matches your current setup’s timing but is more affordable than the one you chose.
