I advised him to hold off until the BIOS update was available, but at that moment the only version listed was the initial release BIOS. He submitted a return request and is currently awaiting a new unit.

upgrading now would cost around 12700k plus MSI+DDR4, but holding off until Raptor Lake with DDR5 improvements looks like a smart decision. Avoiding Gigabyte seems risky—it’s like guessing with no chance of gaining anything for the 12th generation.

It seems the latest BIOS update has resolved the issue reported by Gigabyte and users since launch. I’m planning to purchase the Aorus Elite AX DDR4 as originally intended, since my Bestbuy membership covers a 60-day return window. That gives me time to test it before deciding if it’s a good fit. I’ve had mixed experiences with MSI in the past, so I’m okay with switching boards if necessary.
