12700k memory and RAM setup for Plex server
Hello everyone, my old Plex server crashed, so I need a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Since I’ll be doing high-quality 4K transcoding, Intel QuickSync is essential. The 12700k shares the same UHD770 iGPU as the latest 14th-gen model. I can find any of these setups for a similar price: 1) 12700k + Asus Prime Z690 + 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz, 2) 12700k + Asus TUF Z790 + 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz, or 3) 12700k + Asus Prime B760M + 32GB DDR5 5600 MHz. Which option should I pick for my Plex server? Thanks ahead of time.
Have you thought about other options besides what was mentioned? Plex needs minimal effort to operate. My system runs on a pretty old 3770k with 16GB RAM and a GTX 1660 Ventus (only PCI slot). I stream directly to all my local devices, but I’ve shared my server with three remote users who use it regularly without any problems. The source files are converted to MKV HEVC 4K. From what I understand, the main constraint is the upload speed versus their download speed. Luckily, I have a 1Gb down and 100Mbit up connection, but they often run at 80/20, which can complicate direct streaming for 4K HEVC (up to 120Mbits). If you plan to add more load on the server, an older setup might cause trouble. If you’re targeting the 12700 chipset, opt for the most affordable option. You definitely don’t need the K SKU or the Z chipset—those only help with overclocking. DDR4 is fine instead of 5.
