this 11-pin USB header is quite uncommon, which is why this post appears at the top of Google results. if the link you mentioned is correct and the extra pins are for power, you could remove them and use a standard 9-pin header—just make sure it's actually USB and there are no warranty concerns. what model board are you using?

This suggests you're rerouting the connection to avoid using the two leftmost pins. The additional pins seem to be for grounding.
