The main issue lies with AIO systems. I don't trust them. NH-D15 will also use air cooling as well as most other AIOs available. Still, a 14nm process at 5.2-5.3ghz seems to be the upper bound for water cooling based on real-world experience outside AIO discussions. Edited June 9, 2022 by Guest 5150 made some corrections.

yeah... I got Corsair's Vengeance LPX 3600MHz CL18 The best at stock, The worst at overclocking Tightened the timings from 18-22-22-42 to 17-21-21-41 I also had the secondary timings really tight but I did get some BSODs here and there so I just left them at stock also had the ram speed at 3733MHz which was unstable here and there and I didn't really want to go far with that

Which board do you own? I understand Gigabyte's motherboards work well with their voltage settings. I adjusted the voltage manually and experienced a drop of 20 cents, even at around 75-77°C with a 240AIO.

Yeah, I have a set of 4267mhz 19-19-19 B-Dies. The memory controller only likes to handle them at 4300mhz though. Even on LN2, couldn't get more from the CPU. XMP runs good. Did some 3D benching from 4000mhz CL14's to 4200mhz CL16's and some at XMP. The scores where all pretty similar though. I was more GPU limited, but that's where the competition is at. That 3D mark score you know?!

I found the AIO to be superior to the DeepCool Assassin 3, matching or surpassing the D15. The thermal performance was similar except the 360 took longer to reach full saturation and hit its peak temperature. The maximum temperature was likely 3-4°C lower on the 360. The main variation was noise level. Because the 360 had a bigger buffer, sudden short bursts wouldn't cause excessive fan speed. The Assassin would shut down quickly due to rapid heating and cooling. It felt frustrating with constant up-and-down cycling. The AIO stayed consistently quiet, only increasing speed when it reached full load, which rarely happened. I might have preferred a less aggressive fan setting, but it struggled to handle the OC consistently. 225W is still too high for even the biggest tower coolers.

At the previous location, we upgraded last year by switching to Tap for liquid cooling on the bench and adding a loop for the gaming rig, sometimes with a chiller installed. Now I’m getting ready for a new setup soon. Winter is coming fast. Despite the difficulties, air cooling at 8700K and 5GHz has been tough so far—something I can admit.

They’re built to deliver top performance right out of the box. What value do we really gain from all that work? A mere 5% on a good day? Back when I started in OC, boost wasn’t available—it was included at X frequency. Those times are missed. 1000mhz OCs and that kind of stuff.

It was simply part of the process for the "upgrade." I enjoyed pushing my 8700k to its limits, though that was my initial attempt at overclocking—it wasn’t the most thrilling experience. The 10900kf offered more excitement but didn’t quite match the challenge. Either way, it works well. In the past, I mostly kept my systems stock, focusing on older generations like PIII/450 and transitioning through Haswell without much interest in boosting performance. Money wasn’t always an issue, so now it’s mainly a hobby funded by disposable income.
