1080Ti vs. Quake 1?
1080Ti vs. Quake 1?
I’m feeling a bit bored lately and was wondering how much progress we’ve made since the first 3D graphics card. Then I imagined pitting Crysis from the mid-90s against a 1080Ti. Would it handle 4K resolution? Could Quake scale up to that level with some tweaks? And what would the frame rate be?
CPU usage will be strictly controlled. With no additional constraints beyond the game engine, performance should remain smooth.
Idtech3 has become a surprisingly practical engine when adjusted properly.
Quake 1 runs on ID Tech 1.5, also known as the Quake engine back then. You can definitely adjust it as you like, and because the game has been open source for many years, there are numerous ports and enhancements available—supporting higher resolutions and contemporary visual effects, though achieving top results from a 1996 title remains challenging.
These adjustments are becoming essential to maintain compatibility. Eventually, all engines will reach a stage where upgrades to their core become necessary, as illustrated by examples like Valve's Source 2 port for popular titles such as CS:GO and TF2. It’s clear these problems are growing more noticeable. You can’t expect a 2018 game to run smoothly on an engine built in 2003, isn’t it? There’s a limit, hehehe. I’m not saying it won’t work now, but the focus should always be on planning for the future rather than constantly trying to force older systems to function on newer architectures. That’s my perspective.
I recently played Quake 1 in VR about a year and a half ago. It works well with the mod.
Seems a bit extreme... chasing big creatures in virtual reality is definitely intense.
I also don’t own a graphics card... That’s why affordable YouTube clips work well.
