100° Core Temperatures Come Back: The Cooler's Revenge
Hey everyone, recalling what we discussed a few months back, @SimplyChunk mentioned my CPU was at 100°. We believed we solved it, but now we're taking a more cautious approach and it's back to idling between 80-100° in Windows. I've verified the mounting pressure is optimal, used a spatula to apply thermal paste thoroughly, and double-checked the backplate connection. We changed the headers for the 3-pin pump and confirmed the BIOs showed RPM readings without any cooling activity. The thermal paste we used came with the cooler (AIO Deepcool Gammaxx L240), but it seems it might have been subpar, worsening the situation. We're open to other ideas if anyone has suggestions. When you pay attention to the fans stopping, does the pump function properly? Many Asetek pumps have design weaknesses that cause them to fail quickly. If you don’t hear any water flow through your AIO loop, the pump might be nonfunctional. It’s best to install an air cooler first to pinpoint whether the problem lies with the AIO or your CPU.
Use the original cooler, remove the AIO, install the factory cooler, and check performance.
Air stays functional for years if you only keep the fan; otherwise, maintenance is minimal after about ten years. If it runs without a fan, upkeep is nonexistent. Custom loops let you swap out a pump when it fails—using an air conditioner as a backup if all pumps stop means the whole system will need replacement.
Choose reputable brand names because of the design. It doesn't matter if it's made by the same factory; the original design was superior. The Corsair H100i has been in my system since 2018, and temperatures stay below 30°C during idle as per the specs (possibly inaccurate), but never exceed 35°C in BIOS. I believe adding just fans and fins won't bring my 125W CPU under 65°C peak. Initially, I was hesitant about liquid cooling, but after trying it, I realized it works. Regarding thermal paste, Arctic Silver is the only option I use. Cheap AIOs usually require inexpensive thermal paste.
But this is why we've ended up on the AIO. When she bought the PC is came with a coolermaster 'almost stock' cooler on it and it was hitting 100C in FFXV. I was like, OK lets just get you a Tower cooler..Which we did. Fitted it, it was fine for an hour. All of a sudden, 100C again. It was only a cheaper one but it had a lot of surface area, you know? So i thought. Well maybe it's that she's having trouble fitting it. AIOs are a lot easier to fit around the CPU cause you got no huge lump of metal in the way. When she initially fitted it it was fine. Little on the warmer side, i'll grant. Like FFXV was around 70-75C on the CPU. Great, we both thought. Let's have some fun. Then yesterday, we were talking about her temps in another game and she asked me what mine were. I said i forgot to check i'll just run through time Spy quick and let you know. I did and she said. What you think i'll get? So we set it all up to have a blast together in 3D Mark. First test we did. Starting easier with Sky Diver. alls fine until she gets to the CPU test and boom it's CPUs at 100C again. So we took the block off after letting it cool. Yeah she had a little dry patch in top right corner that's why i told her to spread the paste with spatula this time. but now we can't even get to windows without the CPU being at 100? I just don't get what is happening. It can only be one of two things at this point. The pump has failed or a mounting error. and the temps before, when we first installed it, suggest the pump was working at least then
