Hey there, just a brief overview. I'm getting ready to roll out Zen 3 and am upgrading from my Zen 1 R7 1700X. I've already stocked up on RAM since prices are through the roof right now. I snagged a decent deal on an X570 motherboard that supports Zen 1 APUs and even the R5 1600. Specifically, the MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI fits the bill. I installed my R7 1700X directly onto this board without changing the BIOS settings. It's already running smoothly—though I'm still checking for stability. From what I noticed at 2 AM it worked fine. This is useful info if you're thinking about upgrading your motherboard for Zen 3 while keeping your existing Zen 1 CPU. But I'm curious why MSI isn't clearly listing compatible CPUs? It might be tied to some internal policies, possibly from AMD. Not sure what to make of it.
It really varies by board; it's not officially backed but could function in some cases.
It's basically as simple as them leaving the bios support in. As long as the storage is large enough there is no reason for it not to work.
Some people overlooked adding it to the list. With many B450 boards, upgrading the BIOS for third-gen chips can remove support for older models since the BIOS isn’t large enough to handle all data. They also fail to refresh the memory QVL entries, meaning a board two years old won’t have all necessary memory options due to lack of testing or simply not updating because it’s inconvenient.
