Z790 Hero takes a very long time to load (40-50 seconds).
Hello, I recently moved my setup from the 8th generation to the 13th gen Intel processor. I'm noticing significantly longer startup times. While the actual post phase takes about 40-50 seconds, the OS loading itself feels almost instant—roughly 5 to 10 seconds. Here are some details:
- Specs: MB: Asus Z790 Hero CPU; 13900k RAM; 2x G.SKILL 32GB DDR5 6400MHz; CL32 Boot drive; Samsung 980 Pro
- Extra drives: 970Evo, 980 on Hyper M.2; 2x Sata MX 100
- Notes: Fast boot is enabled in boot options. I recorded the codes and attached a table below. Some entries are missing or marked as placeholders (unused or reserved). USB detection seems slow—disconnecting the hub cut it to around 10 seconds, unlike my previous Z370 build. The memory phase appears to take 15-20 seconds each time.
If you have any tips, please share!
This process takes about 40 seconds. I was planning to cover DDR5 RAM, but only spent 20 seconds on that. Is your BIOS set to the default? Did you make any adjustments? | 9c | 21 | USB Detect | | b4 | 34 | USB hot plug | | 99 | 34 | Super IO Initialization | | b4 | 35 | USB hot plug | | 99 | 36 | Super IO Initialization | | 9c | 46 | USB Detect | | b4 | 46 | USB hot plug | | 92 | 46 | PCI Bus initialization started | | 98 | 47 | Console input devices connected | | -- | 51 | switch to temperature - OS booting | OS BOOT | | -- | 59 | OS boot completed |
Current BIOS info (0813) excludes USB devices except keyboard. No USB devices allowed after 30 seconds, plus only boot drive. In 27 seconds post, I’ll test individual USB devices tomorrow and also connect them directly to the motherboard. Concern about DDR5 learning: I thought it was done once on RAM detection, not every boot, but it seems it takes 15-20 seconds each time. Did I miss something? About BIOS updates – changes are minimal: XMP enabled, multicore disabled, Intel RST activated for Raid0 of old MX100, switched PCIe slot mode for SSDs in Hyper M.2, and USB devices still take a long time to appear in Windows (desktop visible without mouse/keyboard during boot). They seem to disconnect after POST and reconnect when OS starts, with the backlight turning off.
I identified the issue behind the slow USB detection. I’m using a pluggable USB switch (https://plugable.com/products/usb3-switch2) for switching between my main rig and work laptop. It worked fine on my previous machine, but now it’s taking about 20 seconds. No clear explanation yet.
We previously had a feature for fast startup without retraining. Is it still available or has it been removed?
I've turned it on, yet the 20-second RAM check each time feels excessive.
Could you clarify if the current setup might be affecting performance? Also, confirm whether the RAM is placed in the appropriate slots.
