You're weighing options for your 13900KF motherboard. Consider the Z790 and Z690 lines—both are popular for high-end builds. Since your build uses 32GB DDR5 at 6000MHz, ensure the board supports those specifications. Expert advice may vary, but sticking with a higher-end model from Z690 could offer better performance and reliability. Check reviews for compatibility and user experiences before deciding.

The distinction between Z690 and Z790 lies in the number of USB ports on the rear interface (Z790 offers one more), the balance between Gen 3 PCIe lanes and Gen 4 lanes (Z790 slightly favors more Gen 4 lanes while maintaining similar overall PCIe counts), and generally improved memory architecture on Z790 boards compared to Z690. There are some exceptions, like a few Z790 models that match or exceed the memory performance of certain Z690 variants. At DDR5 6000 speeds, both series should handle memory operations smoothly; overclocking RAM becomes the only scenario where performance differences matter. Other variations stem from how each board integrates these features, so you can often find Z690 options with stronger IO options than Z790. For performance, Z690 and Z790 should be comparable unless you specifically aim for overclocking. Practical suggestions depend on your budget and requirements, with popular choices like Z790 Maximus Extreme, Z790 Dark, and Z790 Apex typically priced above $800.

Z690 and Z790 are equally effective for CPU performance. The distinction comes from NVMe M.2, USB, and memory capabilities.

Looking for a more balanced choice beyond the budget end of the spectrum? I'm considering the Z790 AORUS ELITE AX. Are there other boards or Z690 options that might offer improved performance?

At around $250 in the US, the Z790 Elite stands out as my top choice. The Z690 Ultra offers a solid alternative at a lower cost, though its feature set is limited. Gigabyte’s memory layout on their Z690 boards isn’t great, so while it can handle 6000MT/s, it won’t exceed that and struggles with more than four DIMMs. The Z790 Elite clearly outperforms in performance and reliability.

Yes, that's the Z790 AORUS ELITE AX model you mentioned. I have no personal feelings, but I can provide information about it. The MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI is a reliable option for enthusiasts, offering solid performance and good connectivity.

That's the model I was talking about. The Z790-A Pro is another strong choice, similar to the Z790 Elite in quality. I wouldn't choose one over the other too much; they're both solid picks. The decision really comes down to personal taste—BIOS preference, design appeal, or other features like rear USB ports, fan headers, or PCIe layout. Right now, based on US prices, the Z790-A Pro costs about $20 more than the Elite. That's why I didn't highlight it earlier; you could save that amount and still get a nearly identical board.

The MSI board is a bit more affordable where I am. @RONOTHAN## if it matches the Gigabyte version and has no downsides, I think I'll choose that one. Sounds good?
