Z690 Power
Hello, I just got a brand new Z690 Aorus Elite AX motherboard today. It includes three power connectors (2x12, 2x4, and 2x2). Your old board didn’t have a 2x2, and your PSU also lacks it. Do you really need all three, or can you skip the 2x2? I’m planning to build my PC but don’t want to delay until I buy new cables. Thanks, Paul.
These pins are commonly referred to as a 4-pin EPS or CPU connector. The 2x2 configuration is what most users would describe as an 8-pin port, though many power supplies offer a split design with two 4-pin connectors for easier fitting next to the main board. The 2x12 provides a 24-pin interface. Your power supply will likely feature either an 8-pin or a split 8-pin connector, usually labeled as CPU on the side connected to the motherboard. The 24-pin connector is the larger one that comes with the unit. Regarding the 4-pin version, it's often recommended for high-performance builds like the 12900k, but most standard CPUs only require it when you're heavily overclocking. I personally use my 12900k without the 4-pin and haven't experienced any power problems.
I believe you're using a TX850M motherboard, a modular Corsair model. Since your current board uses an 8-pin connector, I'll try it without the 4-pin one. Your CPU is a 12700K, and I plan to overclock it eventually, though I'm not doing it right now. Appreciate the help!
TX850M was intended for a single CPU power connector, but the semi-modular PSU requires the 24-pin and one 8-pin to be permanently connected. The spare 4+4 cable would need to be rerouted onto the 4-pin connector. Spoiler alert.
