Hey everyone, thinking about upgrading to 10900K soon with 16GB fast RAM from G.skill Trident Z. I’ve heard good things about the Z490, ASUS Rogo Maximus, and MSI MEG ACE—they’re all similar in price right now. I’m not sure which one to choose. For me, the key factors are VRM cooling, voltage regulator, IMC (Intel memory controller), and overclocking support. Since I plan to push my i9 10900K to its limits and rely on XMP in BIOS for RAM stability, I want a board that handles that well. Which one would suit you best? Thanks!
IMHO Get a 3900x or 3950x, they're just so much better at multicore tasks, and even in single-threaded workloads are still very competant, or even wait for the 3rd gen refresh of the 3900x (3900xt) which should be even better at single-thread, or possibly wait for 4th gen, which could make the gap even smaller. Otherwise the ROG maximus is a great motherboard, same with the ace. I do beileve that the Maximus does have slightly better oc capibilty, and a slightly better vrm heatsink. Not 100% sure though, both are really good boards, might even come down purely to features (io, and specific things) and rgb ecosystem compatibilty. wtf?
I’d like to know which Z490 motherboard performs better for overclocking and high-speed RAM.
I've got a Hero X with me. The board really stands out—it's solid and performs well. It handles my 4266mhz memory nicely. At 8700K, it runs at 5.4-5.5ghz legacy 3D. It's also great for F@H when I switch to older VGA cards. It can manage two 2060 cards without any issues for heavy processing.
Interesting! You're aiming for a 10900K stable at 5.2 GHz with 4600Mhz, but you're unsure if it's feasible. Also, you haven't found many solid reviews for the Z490 motherboards yet—based on your experience with ASUS boards, they seemed to handle overclocking well.
4600mhz... depends a lot on the memory controller. My 8700K handles 4300mhz reliably, but beyond that it struggles. The 10900K might support higher speeds, though I’m unsure if Intel has improved the controller further. Most Top Asus boards are designed for heavy overclocking. My setup includes many advanced features, so I’m confident the XII Hero will too. MSI MEG Ace is also a strong choice. I don’t like the BIOS of some lower-end boards much, but that’s just a personal taste.
