Well, the i5-7400 doesn’t really matter if you’re going for the best performance. You can fit it into any subpar motherboard without issues. Two things matter: Do you require quick memory? Then you’ll need a Z170 or Z270 board. The max speed for B250 boards is 2400MHz and lower, while B150 supports up to 2133MHz. If you’re planning an upgrade, think about needing more than 32GB of RAM. Using more RAM won’t speed things up much, so investing in a good motherboard isn’t worth it unless you really need it. The top upgrade would be switching to the i7-7700k, which offers solid performance. If you’re looking for budget-friendly options, AMD Ryzen chips with six cores are available at lower prices. But can you run them? Anything demanding over 32GB won’t help much, so extra costs for a better board aren’t justified.
I get it, but I don’t want an unused stick gathering dust. I know my PC runs at 3200, but I’m fine with anything under 2400 if it works. My main goal is to have both sticks connected and use them without worrying about speed. Upgrading the CPU isn’t a priority right now. I just need a motherboard that’s solid and up-to-date.
You can sell it and invest in upgrades later. Alternatively, buy the full setup and purchase two 8GB modules because that’s what most gamers use for their PCs. Keeping extra RAM on hand is also wise. I currently have a few parts stored in my spare box, just in case you need them.

A mobile device won't improve RAM support, so it won't boost performance that way.
Otherwise, the issue is that 32GB support is very limited. With B250, H270, and Z270 boards no longer being produced, it could be hard to locate what you're looking for. I think some premium ASUS models might still handle it, but it seems like a poor investment right now.
I think I should opt for a motherboard with at least 16GB RAM then. Yeah, but I'm not focusing on speed or performance details! I don't care about how fast it runs or anything related to RAM. Just need something solid enough to handle it. If not, I'll grab a 16GB one and keep the other somewhere safe just in case.
