Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well today. I'm reaching out because I need some advice about upgrading my RAM. Right now I have an i7-7700k that's boosted to 4.9Ghz, paired with a Z270X motherboard. I've got two 8GB sticks for a total of 16GB, running at 4133Mhz each. I'm thinking about getting a new GPU, maybe a RTX 3070 for gaming at 1440p. I'm currently using a GTX 970. My main concern is whether I should buy the same RAM sticks or look for brand new ones. I've found it hard to locate new, unused units except on sites like eBay, which usually have Open Box or used options. I'd rather avoid those if possible, but I might need to.
My question: Should I purchase two 8GB sticks at 4133Mhz each from eBay, or should I buy brand new RAM? For example, two 16GB sticks at 3600Mhz or higher? Thanks in advance for your help!
It's unlikely you'll reach those high speeds with regular sticks. For top memory performance, consider replacing the sticks.
Typically RAM speeds don’t greatly affect performance, so I’d choose something affordable and readily available. The 3200 modules appear to be the most budget-friendly, though the 3600 offers a similar price point. I lean toward lower latency rather than higher frequency, which means I’d probably pick either a 3200 CL14 Kit or a 3600 CL16 Kit.
The speed is now 3600mhz. My concern is whether a different motherboard would be necessary. I recall those 2x8GB RAM modules didn’t fit on my older board, so I upgraded to this one you mentioned. Regarding latency, CL14, CL16, or CL18 are all acceptable; higher numbers are better.
You seem to already have 16GB of 4266 RAM. Why would you need 32GB? It doesn’t really add much for gaming, and slower memory might actually slow things down more than it helps. Lower latency tends to be preferable.
