Hey everyone, just joined this forum and wanted to share my progress while building a functional domain controller for use on some laptops around my home. Since I have no prior experience with this setup, I’m here to ask for help or guidance as I go through the process. If anyone wants to assist or learn from my journey, I’d really appreciate it.
My current machine is a fairly old prebuilt PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor at 2.66GHz and 6GB of RAM. It’s essentially a system we used before that now serves as my server. For testing purposes, I’m connecting to two Cisco network switches (probably around 2600s models) and plan to post photos once everything is set up.
So far, I’ve started by configuring a SharePoint server—though I won’t go into too much detail there—and also implemented a group policy. I’ll share screenshots of the policies once I get more done.
Looking forward to your feedback and any tips you can offer!
Great job. I could configure a domain controller after gathering sufficient computers that can connect to it.
I’m not sure how strongly you feel about this IT topic, but if it really matters, I’d suggest checking out these two books from the Microsoft Press Store: Windows Server 2012 R2 Inside Out Volume 1 and Volume 2. That way, you’ll be set up for running Windows Server 2012 R2. If you’re keen on diving deeper, reading a reputable book is definitely better than just gathering online info, which can sometimes be unreliable. It’s hard to tell what’s true when you’re still learning, and physical books offer a more trustworthy experience. Plus, there’s something special about flipping through pages and getting lost in the content.
In the end, I think the current tech fits well, but I’ll appreciate the reading suggestions. Thanks!
