Your system may have rebooted unexpectedly.
I checked some files on my external drive and suddenly stopped without any warning. After that, it restarted and briefly showed the update settings screen. What occurred? The screen went dark, then turned off and came back on.

Since when have you last enabled automatic updates? Windows will restart automatically after a day following the installation of updates.
Did you use an authentic copy of your earlier OS? People claim that unofficial Windows versions behave strangely after sitting around for a while—possibly after several hours of inactivity.
Windows doesn't simply shut down instantly. It usually displays a "shutting down..." alert. Windows Update is triggered either when the system powers off or when it starts, unless a reboot is required. In your situation, a power interruption occurred. The PSU might be faulty, or the wall current dropped briefly—enough to force a restart, or there could be a hardware issue. Another possibility is the overheating protection activated. Based on the hardware and build, it may restart or power off the system. It’s important to verify your temperatures. After some time, you could perform stress testing, inspect the motherboard and components for hot spots (areas with temperature sensors but no software reading), and check for any dust buildup. A personal incident involved a case where trapped heat built up in a poorly ventilated area due to design flaws. You might have a similar problem if there’s residual metal dust from installation or debris that caused a short circuit during startup. Cleaning the system thoroughly should resolve the issue.
