I considered that concept. What if two PCs were linked via USB, with one running USB gadget mode to act like a network adapter? USB speeds range from 5 to 10 Gbps, and USB cards tend to be more affordable than dedicated NICs. It might not be suitable for long distances, but it could work for linking a router, NAS, server, or possibly an RPi cluster (like a ring network).

USB controllers aren't designed to act as virtual devices here, yet Thunderbolt networking exists and is commonly used today with USB connections. This allows for extremely fast connections between modern Mac Mini computers for advanced collaborative tasks at a lower cost.

Someone suggested USB controllers with gadget mode, thinking it would work, but it didn't. Dang. Later I learned there aren't many affordable USB4 options for PCs available.

USB4 isn't the same as Thunderbolt even though they're marketed together. Verify their features first before using them. However, you can purchase USB Ethernet adapters, connect one to each device, and use a network cable between them.

I aimed for a cost-effective USB bandwidth solution, though it looks like that's not feasible.

@wiktorpyk Somehow there is a way to use an iPhone with an ethernet to usb cable adapter. This would allow wired networking for smartphones, and charges the battery too https://www.howtogeek.com/840514/how-to-...-ethernet/
