I own a prebuilt system with a Ryzen 5800X, Gygabyte 3070 OC, and a Cyberpower Gygabyte B550 UD AC motherboard. I’m considering upgrading to an X570 but am unsure if the $200 extra is justified since my main use is gaming and I don’t plan to overclock.

The motherboard influences CPU boost capabilities, available settings, and built-in features. Stability issues only arise with extremely poor boards; even a decent Gigabyte model works adequately. Performance-wise, it may lag slightly compared to top-tier options, but usually not noticeable. The chipset plays a minor role in overall board quality. A solid B550 board (such as MSI B550 Tomahawk, ASRock B550 Taichi, ASUS Strix B550-E, etc.) outperforms most X570 boards under $175 and beyond. Unless you require advanced X570 features like numerous USB ports or PCIe Gen 4 support, opt for a reliable B550 board to save costs.

Ronothan, I’m leaning toward keeping the x570. From what I see compared to other B550 models, it looks more affordable. The small VRM coolers also suggest it might not be handling high power efficiently. I’ve been struggling to get full GPU utilization even with a solid 850-watt PSU, and I’m using only about 80% of it. It feels like there are limits on how much my CPU and GPU can push. I’m not super familiar with motherboards or power specs, but the BIOS support seems quite limited. Back in my day, I had a great motherboard and DDR3 RAM felt top-notch compared to this.

You're correct about the budget motherboard, but there are many affordable X570 options available (ASUS X570 Prime-P, MSI X570 Gaming Plus, Gigabyte X570 UD, etc.). The chipset doesn't really impact overall quality, though it can be a factor in some cases (like with A320, but not so much with X570 or B550). The B550 Tomahawk is highly regarded, only surpassed by overclocking-focused boards such as X570 Godlike and Crosshair VIII. Keep in mind the Strix B550-F offers better performance than the X570 TUF. What games are you running? Your GPU usage seems high, but it might be a game limitation rather than a CPU issue. The motherboard mainly affects CPU voltage scaling, not GPU power draw. VRM temperatures will be key to determining if overheating is the cause. The Gigabyte UD line isn't known for premium components or construction, so overheating could be possible, but it's unlikely—check the boost levels and temperatures before spending money.

I replaced the motherboard and achieved 95-97% GPU utilization with just 10-40% CPU usage. My Ryzen 5800x seems to be handling it without any issues.
