Both options work well; I suggest choosing the Crucial P1 instead of the 980.

The 980 employs TLC memory whereas the P1 uses QLC. It’s DRAMless in the 980 but present in the P1, and it seems you’re searching for a boot drive that highlights the flaws of DRAMless SSDs.

The 980 performs well at very high speeds, so a DRAM cache isn’t crucial there. I’m currently running it as a boot drive, and everything works smoothly even during stress tests.

I'm highly confident the P1 is DRAMless too. My initial purchase was justified because of its price and features like QLC storage, even though it lacked DRAM. After some research, I realized my assumption was incorrect—I had mixed up the P1 and P2 details. It seems the newer models (P2) do remove DRAM, but not the P1. A review from Serve The Home in April 2021 confirms this.
