I've just moved from Windows to Linux. I keep Windows as a dual boot option, but I also want it in a VM for simpler access. My Windows retail key is still valid, though I'm unsure if it applies to VM installations or only one device. If it does, there should be a way to transfer the Windows setup to the VM while preserving all files and programs.
On Linux you can start the dual-boot drive in a virtual machine and install both systems simultaneously.
The agreement restricts use to one instance at a time. For a complete retail license, you can transfer it from virtual to physical or similar formats—but there are restrictions on how often this can happen. Review the license terms; it typically applies once every 90 days or similar (common for server OS). If it's an OEM license, moving it is not permitted.
