Your laptop's battery is completely drained in just five minutes!
Hey everyone, after gaming with the boys I took a break and turned off my laptop. I keep checking its battery status using hwmonitor and Windows tools. Yesterday during playtime and even before it, my battery was at 15% wear—still okay since I bought the machine in July 2021. I use Asus Zephyrus M15 and never let it charge past 60% with the built-in limiter. After restarting, when I opened Chrome and saw around 60% charge, my laptop froze. After a minute I thought it was a Windows error, then I plugged it into the charger and the battery wear dropped to 56%. It’s really surprising what happened and I’m not sure how to fix it. I’ve already talked to Asus, anyone have any ideas? Thanks! P.S. The first photo is my current battery level and the second shows yesterday morning.
I wouldn't dwell too much on it, because it seems to be a software glitch or a serious hardware issue. If you keep the battery at only around 60% all the time, it could interfere with any monitoring tools. Fully charge it and see if that improves things (unless you notice unusual odors). You can also open the laptop and inspect the battery for swelling, or simply remove it if it's mainly used as a desktop via the charger.
I attempted a full charge but it didn’t work. There are no unusual odors, yet I’m holding back from opening it just in case the Asus service team holds me responsible. This is my college laptop, which makes me very concerned. In the worst case, I might have to replace the battery, something I’d rather avoid since it wasn’t my fault at all.
Reach out to ASUS support for assistance. Make sure to save all crucial information on a different storage device and consider erasing the laptop's drive before submission.
I've emailed Asus about the problem and saved a backup of my laptop. I'm worried whether they'll charge me for the battery replacement. We should keep an eye on the situation. Thanks a lot for your assistance!
They shouldn't if the laptop is still covered by warranty. Feel free to ask.
never exceeding 60% charge is often misunderstood, and could actually cause more harm than help, as it forces the battery to discharge further into lower levels and might increase the number of cycles. practically speaking, aiming for 20-80% seems reasonable, but there are many subtleties involved. --- in any case, the situation becomes more complex. --- speaking from experience, heavy gaming on a battery can mislead the BMS, causing unusual behavior. my laptop showed strange readings after I accidentally played games while it was on battery, draining it quickly—about 20 minutes. once it stabilized after a few cycles, I don’t see much concern. beyond that... i’m quite doubtful about those “battery health” percentage indicators. the notion that this is shown as a fixed number with a clear lifespan feels more like guesswork than solid data. battery degradation should be reflected in how much charge it can store and how long it lasts under load, not in some abstract percentage. from what I found online, this depends heavily on voltage drop during use. now, it’s really sensitive to the wire gauge connecting the BMS to the cell tabs—changes in resistance, measured in tiny voltage shifts, matter more than a simple percentage. so after a few normal days, I’d expect it to settle back. EDIT: P.S.: suggesting that staying below 60% might actually be overstating the issue, because the exact stage in the charge/discharge process could shift what the system expects as wear. the BMS tends to focus on balancing near full charge, which makes sense in constant-voltage mode but not so much in constant-current mode.
