MSI Modern 14 B4MW, Ryzen 5 4500u, 512gb SSD, 8gb ram. Windows 10. Throughout the school day, my laptop becomes increasingly unresponsive. Initially, the mouse movement slows down, as if the trackpad briefly disengages and then restarts several times each second. After about 20 minutes without opening additional tabs or apps, the device stops functioning properly—mouse control fails completely and nothing loads. This occurs even when only two tabs are active, whether I’m at school or home. Once I return, the laptop operates smoothly again, regardless of power state. Even during a performance-heavy game at home, which puts more strain on the CPU than in class, there’s no lag. I’ve tested all four Windows 10 performance settings at both locations, but the problem persists. The issue seems unrelated to internet speed, as my school connection matches my home setup. I’m hoping someone can help diagnose or resolve this matter.
It doesn’t seem to be a network problem overall. The lag isn’t just from school WiFi quality; it’s likely caused by an app running on the school network.
Use the laptop without Wi-Fi at school. Could a friend be setting up a screen recorder or streamer without your knowledge?
Isn’t the OP required to enable remote streaming? Also, a VPN tunneling to his home would be helpful if possible.
A malicious VNC service may operate silently in the background without any warning.
You're wondering if someone doesn't need VNC running on their device for another person to view the PC. That's a good point, and if you're right, it could be interesting.
Someone might set it up for him. I’m not sure if this is just a guess, maybe I’m mistaken, but what he went through matches signs of remote control or viewing. You could give it a try—install VNC and watch it on another computer; you’ll likely notice some lag as described.
While I was working as you wrote, my remote PC triggered Windows Defender alerts and experienced some slowdowns, though briefly.
It's a new laptop released in December last year, and I haven't manually updated any drivers.
