Your internet connection isn't working well...
I recently switched to my ISP's 500mbps plan. They required a newer modem because my old one only handled up to 100mbps. Now it’s in the family room, with a cable going into the basement (about 10 meters) and into the home switch. The issue is, wired connections give me only 50 down and 1 up, while wireless gives 50 down and 20 up. I connected my laptop directly to the modem, and it performed at 500 down and 90 up—exactly what I’m charged for. What might be limiting performance? Modem – Hitron CODA-4582U (ISP-provided), manufacturer link included; Ethernet Switch – TP-LINK TL-SG1008D (Newegg). All my Ethernet cables are Cat 5e.
Testing speed involves using a speed test tool. Navigate to the adapter settings in Network and Sharing Center, then change adapter options, right-click, and check the status. Is the reported speed 1.0Gbps?
Consider testing your router first. Find its IP address by opening the command prompt and running ipconfig /all. Check the DHCP Server field, then ping that number. Wired links should be under 1ms, while wireless might be higher; anything at 10ms or more suggests a problem. This helps confirm you have a solid connection, though it doesn’t give a definitive answer. It did assist in resolving an internet speed concern a few weeks back.
I was checking speedtest and listed my network and sharing center details. When linked to my modem through a 3ft Cat 5e cable, it reports 1 Gbps. From the modem to the basement via the switch, it shows around 100mbps—still within Cat 5e limits. This suggests the issue lies elsewhere, likely in the connection or device settings. You may want to test with a different cable or check for interference.
It seems like a wire issue is present. 1Gbps requires all 8 wires, whereas 100Mbps works with just 4.
