What router and modem are you employing? It’s likely the router is limiting performance. If the modem is outdated, that could also be the cause. Are there any barriers blocking the Wi-Fi signal from the host router to client devices that might reduce speed? Try linking a device using a solid Ethernet cable and an Ethernet card into the modem directly, then run an internet speed test. If you’re not receiving the service your ISP promises, contact them to inspect their network setup, which may need upgrading.

I'm not sure how to proceed, but if it might help, your router model could be Technicolor TG589vn v2 or possibly v3—they seem similar.

I would have connected via a wired link to my PC, but a representative from the company noticed we had an even more outdated router that wasn’t in use and severed the cables on it—one of them was a LAN cable passing through two walls! That wasn’t inexpensive. My router is a Technicolor TG589vn v2 or v3.

Brings back some of the issues I face while working for an ISP. Do you know which package you're on? I'm not sure, but it's slow. On a very old package we no longer support—around 256kbps or 1.5mbps. These folks also grumble about the speed and paying more when they try to upgrade. By the way, this isn't necessarily true. You also need a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection to reach 200mbps.

Should you contact your ISP to check their information? I don’t really trust them since I’ve seen them involved in scams—like a product that usually costs $40 but they sell it for $200. They even claim it’s a mechanical RGB keyboard, which isn’t true. I got it for free with my PC, so I didn’t fall for any schemes.

The Technicolor TG589vn V2 features only 100 Mbps LAN ports and offers 300 Mbps Wireless N. With WiFi, you’re lucky if you receive about two-thirds of that speed. Therefore, even via cable or wireless, you’re unlikely to hit 200 Mbps. It seems unlikely you’re on a 200 Mbps DSL plan. You’d need to be close to the remote unit in your area or just across the street from the provider’s location. DSL performance drops significantly with distance.

The plan seems quite outdated, so things might have changed since then. Would upgrading to a new router or contacting your ISP make a difference? I'm considering a new router but am unsure what fits my budget of around $70.

To reach the router’s info page, navigate to its IP address. For Technicolor it’s usually http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.254. Then go to Broadband Connection > “DSL Connection” and click ‘View more…’. This will display all your connection details, which you can save as a screenshot. I’m familiar with this device—I previously used it. It’s possible you’re on VDSL, but the router might be limiting speeds. Many ISPs have added G Vectoring for VDSL2, yet this model hasn’t received a firmware update to support it, which reduces performance. With a 150M/50M VDSL line, you’d expect roughly 5M/1M on this unit.

Confirming the TG788vn details from the provided link. Username is 'Administrator' and the password is either blank or shown on the back label.
