Hey everyone, I own an MSI GAMING X GTX 980. My CPU is an older Intel Core I5-4690k and I’m curious if the GPU will really limit performance. Should I consider upgrading to a newer CPU, maybe around the 6th or 8th generation Intel? A Ryzen CPU is still quite pricey in my country, even for the first-gen ones which were around $307. I’ve noticed second-hand Intel Core i7 models from the 6th to 9th gen are also expensive, and some sellers are charging more than the MSRP—like one listed a 9700K for over $10,700. I’m trying to find a good CPU for my GTX 980 under $300. I already have the GTX 980 for $140 and it’s functional, but my CPU usage was higher before I upgraded to the GTX 980. My old GPU was GTX 950.
There’s always a slow point. The issue isn’t the bottleneck itself—it’s when part of the system slows down, leading to poor performance. Many new games run smoothly on a single quad-core processor.
For games requiring strong graphics card performance, your GPU must also utilize the CPU efficiently. Aim for GPU usage around 100%, typically between 88% and 92%. Keeping it below that range indicates a potential bottleneck. Lower GPU utilization during gameplay signals a more severe constraint.
